"You haven't been here long, have you? I can tell."

Wedge sizes the Hero up immediately as a newcomer, warning that he won't last long here without picking up some skills and offering to teach him, dispensing one free tip to start: "watch who you talk to."

He teaches two trades. On pickpocketing, he explains it comes down to distraction, warns that getting caught is still quite likely, and advises only attempting it when nobody but the victim is around, since only an expert can take things from people's pockets without them noticing. Once the Hero improves enough, he grants the final lesson, cautioning that even the best can get caught sometimes.

On lockpicking, Wedge says it isn't too hard to start with, the key being to keep the lockpick from breaking off, and that patience means needing fewer lockpicks over time. At the advanced stage, he teaches the Hero to recognize the sound a lockpick makes right before it snaps, "the gentle clicking of the lock," noting a true expert stands a good chance of opening a trunk without breaking his lockpick.

He also warns the Hero away from a man called Butch, who "has a habit of greeting freshies with a fist to the face."
