Snaf

"I got a new recipe, meatbug ragout à la Snaf. With rice and mushrooms."

Snaf is the camp cook, greeting the Hero as a newcomer and offering advice on where to find ingredients: meatbugs turn up wherever there's rubbish, including some empty huts by the castle wall, and hellcap mushrooms grow on a hill past the broken tower, outside the south gate. He tells the Hero not to judge meatbugs by their looks, since they taste all right once cooked.

Snaf asks the Hero to gather three meatbugs and five hellcaps for his new recipe, admitting he sent someone else after the same ingredients a week earlier who never came back, joking that the man probably joined the New Camp. Once the Hero delivers the ingredients, he gets the stew ready and afterward offers seconds freely, "have another one. Or three!", though he warns he sometimes runs out for the day and the Hero should come back tomorrow.

He also mentions Nek, a warder he'd previously sent on the same errand, describing him as someone who turned coat and never looked too happy here.
