Rufus

"The Rice Lord and his boys are a bunch of thugs, the whole bloody lot."

Rufus works the fields and greets the Hero with dry humor, saying he has no idea what's new since all he does is work the fields, and joking about wanting to tell the Rice Lord to "shove his fuckin' rice where the sun don't shine." Asked who the Rice Lord is, he explains the man was one of the camp's founders who built the fields, but now just stands in his fortress sticking out his pot, a fat old pig.

Asked why he still works a job he hates, Rufus tells the story of Lefty, one of the Rice Lord's goons, who talked him into helping in the fields for just a bit on his first day, then kept dragging him back by force every day after, pressing him with "you ain't gonna let your mates down, are you?" Rufus explains he had no real choice since the man was too strong, and after the third day he started coming on his own. He warns the Hero to steer clear of the Rice Lord's crew. When the Hero later brings him water from Lefty, Rufus is thankful, saying he's bloody parched.
