Pock

"The strong eat the weak."

Pock is an old rice picker in the Colony who welcomes the Hero as a fresh face but seems to forget prior conversations, insisting he has never seen him before even after they've already spoken. He says he was one of the first in the camp and has survived a long time by staying a lowly rice picker and keeping his head down.

Asked why he was thrown in the Colony, Pock explains it was over an unpaid tithe: after a bad harvest left him unable to feed his wife and kids, a bailiff doubled the tithe anyway. He sums up the Colony's law simply as "the strong eat the weak." When the Hero brings him water sent by Lefty, Pock is grateful, thanking Innos and saying he was parched.
