Orry

"Then here's some friendly advice for you: watch out for those bastards from the New Camp!"

Orry guards the Exchange Zone gate for the Old Camp, describing his job as keeping out unwanted guests from the exchange zone, namely the men from the New Camp. He recognizes the Hero as the freshie brought in that morning and checks whether Diego has already given him the rundown, insisting that if not, the Hero should seek him out, since Diego knows everyone and everything.

He paints the New Camp as lawless by comparison, saying it's every man for himself down there, "compared to them, the Old Camp's a bloody temple." He explains the Old Camp controls the Exchange Zone, so New Campers get no fresh goods from outside and rely instead on a gang of thieves. On the Old Camp's own hierarchy, he warns the Hero not to anger the ore barons or the warders, and to stay friendly with the Shadows too, since as a freshie he'll be seen as a digger by default until he proves otherwise.

Orry also recounts the Hero's rough welcome, the Cleansing, where newcomers get beaten by men in warder armor like his own, but reassures him that paying protection money keeps most Old Campers off his back. He directs the Hero to the abandoned mine down the canyon for a weapon, cautioning against settling for a pickaxe since they're heavy and slow. On the woman who arrived with the Hero, Orry confirms convict women are traded to the ore barons in exchange for the king's ore, admitting "it ain't as bad as it looks, though. The girls have an all right life in the castle. I hope."
