Jackal
"Why, protection, of course! As long as you're in my district, I'll make sure you're safe."
Jackal introduces himself with a sales pitch, offering to run a little charity to help poor souls like the Hero for a fee of ten nuggets. He explains that membership gets the Hero protection: if a New Camper or an angry Loon causes trouble, or if he winds up fighting another digger, Jackal will always help the charity member first, though if two members fight each other, he'll simply "pop open a beer and cheer you on." His turf, he says, covers everything from the market to the south gate, with the rest of the Outer Ring split between Fletcher and Bloodwyn.
He isn't pushy about payment, telling the Hero there's no ultimatum if he can't pay yet, just that his protection stays limited to paying members. Once the Hero pays up, Jackal confirms membership and promises to keep him out of trouble, though he also expects tribute in ore at some point, turning the Hero away empty handed if he shows up without any: "is this a joke? I don't see any ore. Come back when you've got it."
Later, if the Hero ends up siding against the Old Camp, Jackal confronts him with open contempt, saying he isn't surprised the Hero turned coat since he "was never cut out to be one of us," and mocking rumors that the Loons went crazy after their ritual didn't turn out how it was supposed to. When the Hero admits raiding the mine was a mistake, Jackal disagrees, saying it looks like it worked out fine from where he's standing, before rallying his men to fight.
