"This bit of the camp is my patch. That means it's on me to keep clear of trouble."

Fletcher warns the Hero off causing trouble on his patch of the camp, grumbling that freshies love to make trouble, especially when they're sneaking around at night, and threatening consequences if he's caught in a digger's hut. When approached about protection money, he brushes it off strangely, claiming "I'm not really here," explaining that he's actually filling in for Thorus, who has gone missing, until his return.

He also gets drawn into the search for a man named Nek, admitting he knew him more or less since they were thrown into the Colony together, though Nek had been doing his own thing for a while. When the Hero reports finding Nek dead, killed by molerats, Fletcher is genuinely saddened, saying "he was a good man," before noting he will now be taking over Nek's patch for good.
