Dusty

"We're really doin' this, are we?"

Dusty is a miner worn down by two weeks of hard labor for a handful of lousy nuggets, most of which goes to food. He's been listening to Parvez, a Swamp Camp recruiter, describe how much better things are there, and is weighing whether to leave. When the Hero offers to help him go, Dusty agrees but says they'll need to bribe the guards, at least a hundred nuggets, and that the south gate is the way to go since the guards at the north gate won't take bribes.

He mentions a friend, Melvin, who left for the Swamp Camp the week before and hasn't been heard from since, which is part of why Dusty hasn't left on his own. Later, he reveals the warders have caught on that he's been talking about leaving, admitting with a shrug, "guess I talked too much," and that it will now take another bribe of about a hundred nuggets just to get them to look the other way. When the Hero offers to cover that bribe, Dusty is caught off guard, unsure why a stranger would want to help him reach the Swamp Camp.
