Cronos
"We plan to channel the ore's magical energy and release it in a giant burst that will 'detonate' the barrier."
Cronos is one of the Water Mages who oversees camp business tied to the ore reserves. He explains the mages' plan to destroy the Barrier by channeling the ore's magical energy into a burst aimed at it, and admits that amassing so much ore attracts all sorts of blackguards and bandits, which is why they rely on mercenaries to protect the vault and keep order.
When the Hero mentions carrying a letter for the highest Fire Mage, Cronos says the camp does sometimes send messengers to their brothers in the Old Camp and had been looking for a new one, though normally that duty falls to Lares' men, whom he calls "crooks, but reliable when it comes to this." He hands the Hero an amulet identifying him as one of their messengers, telling him to show it to Thorus to gain entry, along with a letter for Corristo, the Highest Fire Mage. When the Hero later confirms the letter was delivered, Cronos rewards him, saying he knew he would.
Cronos also rewards the Hero for finding the camp's focus stones, giving him nuggets straight from their reserves and telling him he earned them. Asked about joining the camp, he directs the Hero to Lares or Lee; asked about becoming a mage, he says many want that but the camp doesn't share its knowledge lightly, requiring the Hero to prove his loyalty first.
