Baal Taran

"Everyone who doubts or opposes him will be destroyed."

Baaltaran, who introduces himself simply as Taran, is another member of the Brotherhood of the Sleeper, stationed near the market on the far side of the castle to spread the faith to strangers. He describes the Sleeper as a being "possibly even more powerful than Innos," still limited to the realm of thought while he remains asleep but nearing his awakening; smoking the swampweed the Brotherhood gathers opens the mind and can bring visions of him. He says the coming great invocation will join the Brotherhood's minds and connect their souls to the Sleeper's, who will then show them the road to peace, while warning that everyone who doubts or opposes him will be destroyed.

He explains that only couriers working for Cor Kalom, who trade swampweed to Gomez for outside goods, are allowed into the castle, so the Hero would need to join the Brotherhood to get in that way. When the Hero admits to carrying a letter for the highest Fire Mage, Baaltaran correctly guesses the mages gave it to him before he was thrown into the Colony, and warns him to keep quiet about it, since "some people here would slit your throat for that" and messages from the outside are extremely valuable. He also steers the Hero away from buying mage runes or potions, claiming the Brotherhood sells the same things much cheaper, and points him toward his Brother Parvez, usually found near the market, for a trip to the Brotherhood's camp.
